Gijón International Film Festival presents him the National Cinematography Award Nacho Martinez as a recognition of his artistic career during the closing gala of the Festival.
Montxo Armendariz has had an absolutely successful career for more than three decades. Born in Olleta 1949, he has always felt the urge to tell stories and it has been cinema what allowed him to satisfy that desire. However, his first professional steps led him into the world of electronics, combining them with documentaries and short films, until the story of a coal miner in Navarra crossed his path 27 years ago.

Armendariz directed Nacho Martinez in 1984 in his debut, Tasio in which the actor from Asturias played the brother of the protagonist. The 49th edition of Gijón International Film Festival grants him the National Cinematography Award "Nacho Martinez" during the closing gala of the Festival.

The director from Navarra joins the long list of profesionals that have obtained the award in other editions like Charo Lopez, Angela Molina, Mercedes Sampietro, Maribel Verdú, Assumpta Serna, Eusebio Poncela, Gonzalo Suárez and Juan Echanove. This award that bears the name of the late actor from Asturias recognizes from 2002 the career of outstanding figures of Spanish cinema. This award joins the long list of recognitions of Armendariz, who also won two Goyas, Best Screenplay for Cartas de Alou (1990) and Best Adapted Screenplay in 1995 for Historias del Kronen. Also, the director from Navarra was recognized in 1998 with the National Cinematography Award and is a Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Navarra.

In 1996 Montxo Armendáriz directed Secretos del corazón, an Oscar nominated film, in which he coincided with Charo Lopez, also recognized with the Nacho Martinez award in its last edition. In his filmography are included titles like Cartas de Alou, Historias del Kronen, Obaba or Silencio roto.

In 1999 the director founded, with Puy Oria, the independent production company Oria Films. Armendariz has combined in recent years his dedication behind the camera with production, in works like La guerrilla de la memoria (Javier Corchera, 2002) and El inmortal (Mercedes Moncada, 2004)

In his latest work, No tengas miedo he has directed Michelle Jenner, Lluis Homar and Belen Rueda. The film, which is his nint, tells the story of a young woman who, after a dark childhood, has to remake her life and, incidentally, deal with people, feelings and memories that keep her tied to past.

Montxo Armendariz's filmography has always been marked by social concerns, from a fiercely personal perspective, has resulted in issues such as identity, the excesses of adolescents or racism.
