MATTEO GARRONE, STAR OF THE RETROSPECTIVE OF FICX 54
Italian director Matteo Garrone's will star in the main retrospective of the 54th edition of theGijon International Film Festival.
Garrone, one of the most important transalpine authors of this century, has
developed, despite his youth (47 years old), a wide range of works that have
temporarily taken him from fantastic realms of the seventeenth century (The
Tale of Tales) to Neapolitan slums nowadays, under the Empire of crime
(Gomorrah), though he has always shown
interest by the reality of his native country.
These features have led Garrone to get diverse and relevant international
awards perhaps the most of importants are the two Grands Prix of the Jury at
the Cannes Festival granted, consecutively, to his films Gomorrah (2008) and
Reality (2012) . With the first one, an adaptation of the controversial
bestseller by Roberto Saviano he also achieved to win trophies for best film,
director and screenplay at the European Film Academy Awards and at the David di
Donatello (the transalpine equivalent to our Goya awards), in addition to a
nomination for Best Foreign Film at the Golden Globes 2009.
Of course, Matteo Garrone will be in Gijon to star encounters with viewers and present these works, the most famous of his career, and others that the Spanish public may not know, those who made him take the first steps to place him on the European cinematographic map as a key reference. To finish shaping this cycle, conducted in collaboration with the Film Library of Cantabria (where you can see the cycle after passing through the FICX), the Gijon International Film Festival will publish a book where the followers of the Roman author may find wide and detailed analysis of his full work.
