Elisa Cepedal: “I believe in stories as an excuse to make cinema”

55FICX is dedicating one of its specials to Asturian Elisa Cepedal. Graduated at the London Film School, his work proposes “a very intimate look about belonging to a social and personal environment”.
At the first Toma 3 FICX Vermuts, which will bring authors closer to the public, she offered more keys about her work.

The programme is offering the opportunity to watch all her short films La playa (2010), Ay Pena (2011) and El desastre (2014). “I felt like these works had a common driving thread between them, and it was natural so show them like that”. In the first one “the Castillian landscapes have a very important role due to their infinity and monotony “, while the second one was filmed in-doors, “the methodology changed, because I knew the locations where we filmed better and could plan accordingly”. She recognizes that now she’d “take different decisions, with longer shots”, but at that moment she wanted “drastic and visible cuts during production”. The disaster appeared as part of the project Llar, backed by Ramón Lluís Bande, where she created a character “drawn from Bárbara Santa-Cruz”.

After her stay at the 55FICX, Cepedal will keep filming her first film, El trabajo o ¿a quién le pertenece el mundo?, which she expects to be ready by 2018. Although she believes in the stories almost like “excuses to make cinema”, she revealed that the project is “set in the Mining Valleys” and it’s about “the end of the coal industry and the change it carries”. She asserts she conceived it “two years ago”, and ever since then has “changed”, so “despite I plan a lot, I can’t speak about the movie until I finish it”.

The director has decided to film her debut film in 16mm, like the exercises from her school. “We were going to make it digital, but I thought filming the Mining Valleys in celluloid and I changed my mind”. About the potential budget increase that it implies, she assures that this way “you don’t need to work a lot in post-production or colour correction”, and in the process she also has “help from the labs”, while she lamented there’s none left active in Spain.
